Pro's Verses Con's Phoenix Pool Ownership

Did you know that 0ver one half of all Phoenix homes have a pool?  That may seem like a lot of pools if you're from cold and snow country! Phoenix summers do get a tad hot - ok some days it can get really hot  (but seriously it's a dry heat)! And that's why many families prefer a home with a pool in the Phoenix Area! Over the 30 years I've been selling Phoenix homes I've noticed that about one half of our clients want a pool and the other half absolutely don't want a pool. Let's jump into the pool and talk about the Pro's Verses Con's Phoenix Pool Ownership so you can figure out if owning a pool is the right choice for you and your family.

Pro's Of  Phoenix Pool Ownership

  • Pools provide a great place for family and friends to relax and have a lot of fun together.
  • Pools add a beautiful aesthetic look and feel to the backyard and landscaping.
  • Pools provide a welcome retreat from the world to meditate, read or just enjoy quiet moments. Often times home buyers don't consider this aspect but soon after moving in to their home they begin to appreciate this fabulous pool benefit.
  • Pools  are great for an active lifestyle. It's easy to get in your daily workout by jumping in the pool right in your own backyard. No more excuses for not exercising!
  • Pools are truly the Center of Southwestern parties, events and entertaining. We have held many family/friends parties and celebrations as well as huge business events around the pool and back patios.  Poolside is a perfect setting for any special event!
  • Pool's can provide a quiet place to get some office work done on your laptop. My favorite idea!

Con's of  Phoenix Pool Ownership

  • Pool ownership can be expensive to maintain and repair. Home owners that haven't had a home with a pool must decide whether taking care of the pool themselves or hiring a professional pool company is a better choice for them. See more below...
  • Liability issues can be a major issue with pool ownership. Families with small children must properly fence and secure the pool area at all times. It's always important to have an adult watching the kids in the pool, especially during events and parties. And teens can be a handful too. I know  from personal experience that teens can act up while having fun together and they too need a little supervision. It's also important to be mindful of any people with special needs around the pool.
  • Taking good care of your pool will take consistent care and time. See more below...
  • Pools can add value, or not. Carefully consider whether building a new pool will add value. I can help you make sense of  whether adding a pool or buying a home with a pool does add value and how much value it does add.

We had a large pool at our home in Los Angeles.  The problem we had was finding the right professional to keep the pool in beautiful shape.  After that it was easy to take care of a few things like the leaf catcher and filling it when it evaporated a bit.  We enjoyed it!  A

Good post for anyone living in a hot climate, these are all the things we considered before building ours. I am glad we did though I am not sure I would have another one.

We went the salt water route with our last pool to save on the maintenance (chemicals) expense and BOY, what a difference! If only our neighbors hadn't had humongous oak trees behind the pool - I think every leaf that fell from those trees found their way into our pool!

I can highly recommend a cover in the winter! LOL

Great post, Anna! Lots of useful information for those buying homes in Phoenix with pools.

Anna around here a pool is nice to have, but not a necessity.  But in the really hot weather states I imagine the Pro's out weight the Con's

What a perfect post for determing if pool dwelling  homeownership is the right course. This is a very comprehensive list of the pros and cons of having pool - I know we would definitely want one in your wonderful dry climate. Heck, I even owned a house with a pool when I lived in Portland.

Hi Anna,
Our percentage is not nearly that high but it has also been my experience that people definitely DO or DON'T want a pool. Me... I would be in the DO category if I lived in Phoenix. Great outline of pros and cons.

There seems to be no in between with buyers when it comes to a pool. they either have to have one or want nothing to do with it. Great info.
