Pondering Rock Sunday...

Getting  ones direction in life and business can be as simple as 1, 2 3 or as difficult as 1 to 1M. It's up to each one of us to decide our own direction. Do we want to keep it simple or do we want to make it difficult? Who knows! On any given day the wind could blow either way, couldn't it? Or maybe the wind makes no difference at all and it's about something else. Ok so that's sounding esoteric and it is meant to sound like that - just saying! It's what pondering is all about, or is it?

Today while out hiking in the North Phoenix Mountain Preserve I observed  a bunch of stacked rocks along the trails.  I knew what that was all about because it's a game I used to teach groups of kids on nature hikes. Somebody took their time today to teach the kids how to 'mark' their direction to get safely back to their starting point. And the kids probably had fun stacking up those rocks! I saw all kinds of configurations - pretty fun stuff to observe & it  brought back lots of good memories - lots! And one of these days I'll tell you about the big mud fight for kids - talk about fun with kids that was FUN!

Pondering Rock Sunday...

Pondering about Stacked Rocks

It got me to pondering like Michael Jacobs  sometimes does on Sunday! This is exactly what we do  in the real estate industry for newer agents or those agents (or any business) that lose their direction along their path. Give them good directions and suggest they keep it simple or not. It's their choice.

I've long thought that there are 2 kinds of people - 1 Folks who know they can make stuff happen and Just Do It (JDI) and 2 Folks that fret about making stuff happen and put out gazillion excuses why they can't. Plus I will add the 2nd group makes up all kinds of stories in their minds and they try to convince other folks it's all true as well.  And it's easy to tell what direction most folks decide to take. It's also easy to spot what group we're hanging in if we're being honest with ourself! Yes it is - just listen the story you're telling yourself!

For most of us humans there are times when we go in both directions at once and get lost. Group 1 Folks get out of the hole they dug ASAP and don't go all nuts about being stuck and they feel great.  Group 2 Folks dig a deeper hole, tell themselves more made up stories and continue to feel bad. For Group 2 folks it's really a matter of learning to begin thinking differently as well as creating new actions that will compel them out of the hole they dug. It's not easy to make those shifts (and yes I know I said it's easy as 1,2,3 but it will become easy with practice)  ok so where was I in my pondering process.....it's not easy at first to change thought patterns one has had for years and it's not  easy to stop telling stories that make things impossible and make you feel bad. Is it? Or isn't it?

So next time you 'get stuck or lose your direction, think of the kids out stacking up rocks and having lots of fun along the path. And remember you can keep re-stacking your rocks as often as needed and have fun doing it! The trick is to enjoy your journey along your path. Just Do It!

Here we go ...pondering about rocks on this beautiful Sunday. Thanks Michael Jacobs ! Way more words than needed for pondering...but that's what happens when one ponders!

Until next time let's take a hike and stack up those rocks!

Anna a great post to ponder about.... your writing reminded me of my days when I was in the US Army and we used to question our soldiers when something did not go as we planned it and the explanations aka excuses we received... I would ask them to take out their E-Tool (Entrenching Tool aka a small shovel) to make it easier for them since they were digging themselves into a hole...Endre

Hi Anna: What a great post! I miss hiking in Arizona so this hit a spot with me in more ways than one...Those trail markers are so beautiful! You could actally frame them all and do a collection of them on a wall..they are after all a work of art! I love your idea of pondering as well. Some might say "Why waste your time" pondering but the whole point, as you say, is to come to terms with just what you are saying to yourself: The observer being observed--there is a great wealth of knowledge in doing that! Thank you so much for the shared journey. I will keep it front of mind and do some pondering myself...

HI Anna- I'd almost forgotten about stacking the rocks. It was longggggg ago but when I was a Girl Scout, I think we did something like that on one of our hikes.

Hi Anna,
Your ponderings had my mind taking it's own path.  In my experience, most of the Group 2 folks spend a lot of time blaming other people for their problems. They don't even realize with a changed mindset they could also be a Group 1 person... who they probably think are there by luck or happenstance.

Anna it is very hard to get to where you want to go without having a sense of direction on how to get there, and the simplest path is always the best path in my opinion.

Reading a good book right now talking about how we are so often programmed by our upbringing, religion, parents etc, and we need to break those rules to move on if they are holding us back. I think those in group 2 may need some help in that regard. Just do something, then adjust.

Taking the journey will get you there but sitting on the sidelines will get you nowhere! Great advice Anna to those who may get lost or lose their momentum in life and in business. It is all about the choices made every day!

AB~now I'm a rock stacker, but it's more about the feeling it gives me. The art of it. And so, that was an aha moment to discover that kids do this to stay on the path and not get lost. What a delight this pondering post was..and I have missed 's Michael Jacobs ' ponderings...but haven't had a whole lot of time to spend here in the Rain lately.

Hi Anna

Well that was cetainly a thoughtful post to ponder about getting stuck or losing direction, perfectly illustrated with those cool rock sculptures. I'll have to watch for these when out walking away from the beach - can't say I have ever noticed.
