Barney's Earth Day Miracle

This last year or so our little Barney has had such horrible allergies. His skin would get very red and he'd scratch and bite himself constantly and was always hyper. No matter what we tried we couldn't help him - and trust me we tried a lot of things.  We started getting him allergy shots at the Vet's office every couple of months for the past year. And the shots did work, at first.  Recently the shot lasted only about 2 weeks or so which is not good.  I'm not a fan of taking or giving unnecessary drugs to animals or humans for that matter as some times that will create another problem.  We knew we had to find another approach....but what?

Barney's Earth Day Miracle

Barney's Earth Day Miracle

Last week we talked about if there were any chemicals used in our yard by the landscapers to make him allergic? Or maybe, he was picking up something from other yards while out  for his walks? We went through everything that had been done differently this past year or so but nothing made sense to us - except other yards and blooming plants and shrubs.  He had been fine for 5 years with no signs of allergies up until the last year or so so it was perplexing that it had gotten so bad for him.

We decided to try washing off his paws and legs and to wipe him down all over with a paper towel and water - every time he went out and came in. Simple solution, maybe! Mr. Barney is the kind of dog that likes to go in and out - A LOT - so we knew that wasn't going to be so easy for us while we were both working in our offices! But we were willing to do whatever we needed to do to help out this little guy.

The first time we tried it LOW and BEHOLD he settled down and quit licking and biting himself and his skin turned a perfect pink within an hour. We kept wiping him down every time he came back in the house all last weekend and Alleluia -it worked like a charm! Today as I write this post Mr. Barney is peacefully asleep  in my office for about an hour now (yea) which is a first in a very long time! Maybe I can get some work done now...like perhaps get back to blogging!!

Barney Sleeping Peacefully - Finally!

We are both so so happy for our little guy Barney!

Anna good to hear that is working, but it indicates to me that it is probably  something he is walking on.

Oh my gosh, that is great news, Anna! Who knew?!

I was just talking to someone about my Barney's skin issues - they said it's common for Lhasa's but, when the vet tested him, he doesn't have any allergies. JUST today, I thought of looking into DynoVite - I keep hearing that's good for skin issues. I may try your trick first!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Debe Maxwell, CRS we looked in to the allergy thing too but got no where with it. Let me know how it goes after washing off his paws. My guess is that your Barney will really like getting more attention! Our Barney sure does!!

Endre Barath, Jr. it was so hard seeing him so uncomfortable. And it was even harder giving him 1/2 a benadril and see him sleep for hours on end and not be himself. Not good choice either.  Here's what's interesting about washing his paws etc down every time he comes in - he's now totally calm and not wanting to go out by 75% from before,  so we don't have to wash him down constantly!  We are so relieved!  I wanted to get the word out to others in case they're having issues with their dogs - in particular little white dogs seem to develop this problem.

Sheila Anderson you do have a lot of paws to wipe off each time. My guess is sometimes it's a rain and mud issue for you rather than allergies, right?

Anna- I am so happy that wiping Barney down worked!!!!  And it's a simple solution and you're not filling Barney up with meds. Maybe we all need to try that for our own allergies.

Hi Anna,
Yay.  Problem solved but the mystery remains as to what he's getting on his feet?  It must be some kind of chemical on the grass?  Glad to hear Barney is sleeping peacefully again.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 - You're a good mom to Barney. He looks exhausted in that last photo and I'm relieved to know he's doing better. When it comes to loved ones and in business, you're never a quitter. I wish you and every member of your family well.

Oh my gosh, Anna, now I know why you asked the question about weed control without chemicals. I'm glad you have found a solution that works for sweet little Barney. Did you ever figure out what is causing it?

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD yes that's why I asked.  Wiping him down every time we bring him back in the house is still doing the trick. And he loves LOVES the attention. He comes in the house and lays out on his back, paws up.....like he's saying I'm ready!!
